Where to look for Fossils at Cloughton Wyke

(Cloughton Wyke) - 2006

The first area to examine is North of the car park, this is where bivalves, brachiopods and gastropods can be collected. Here, the beds can be found on the foreshore. Simply look for the Lebberston Member (a 3m thick Millepore bed forming a series of reefs running southeast into the sea). This bed has 3 layers of shelly calcareous sandstone and sandy limestone. The middle layer is the one that is highly rich in shells.

Fossil plants and bivalves can also be found South East of the car park, here fallen boulders can be found on the foreshore. Look for plant remains in nodules and on the foreshore.
